Why goo.gl is gone — and what replaces it

Google stopped creating new goo.gl links in 2019 and began shutting the service down for good. After a late reversal, active goo.gl links were kept alive, but any link that had gone quiet started returning a 404 from 25 August 2025 — and you can no longer make a new one. There is no first-party Google shortener anymore. That is the gap this page fills: paste a Google URL and get a permanent short link with the click analytics goo.gl never offered.

Unlike goo.gl, an in.bio link does not expire on you, and from a free account you can edit its destination later or point it at your own domain. Every link also ships with a QR code for print.

Why Google URLs get so long

Google products build URLs out of long opaque IDs and state. A Forms response link looks like docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd…/viewform?usp=sf_link; a Maps place carries latitude, longitude, and a base-64 data= blob; a Drive file appends ?usp=sharing to a 33-character file ID. None of it is meant to be read or typed. Shortening hides that machinery behind one clean slug while forwarding every character faithfully, so the survey, document, or map still opens exactly right.

Link previews and Google Workspace sharing

When you drop a link into Gmail, Google Chat, or Docs, Google fetches it to build a preview chip. Crawlers follow the redirect through to the destination, so the preview reflects the real Google page, not the short link. One thing to keep in mind: Docs, Sheets, and Drive files still obey their own sharing permissions — a short link does not make a private file public. Set the file to Anyone with the link first, then shorten the resulting URL.

Tracking a Google Form or Doc

Sharing the same Form across email, a newsletter, and a chat group? Add a UTM tag per channel with the UTM builder before you shorten, and INBIO will tell you which channel actually filled it out — something Forms' own response view cannot. For a batch of Sheets or Slides links, the bulk shortener does them all at once.

Docs, Sites, Calendar — and one link per channel

The Google surface is bigger than Forms. Google Sites publishes to long sites.google.com/view/… paths, a Calendar event share carries an encoded eid=, and My Maps links run to hundreds of characters. All of them shorten the same way, and all of them keep their permissions in Google — the short link only forwards. That makes a single tidy slug work across a syllabus, an event page, and a shared map.

When you send the same Google asset to more than one audience, resist the urge to reuse one link. Make a separate short link per channel — or add a UTM to each — so the response you get back is attributable: newsletter versus intranet versus printed handout.
