How LinkedIn rewrites your links

Post any URL longer than about 26 characters and LinkedIn silently rewrites it to an lnkd.in link when you hit Post. It works, but it is LinkedIn's link, not yours: no click analytics, no custom slug, no way to change the destination, and no reporting on who followed it. Shortening with in.bio first gives you a link you own — one that reports its clicks by country, device, and referrer, and keeps working the same everywhere else you paste it, from a resume to an email signature to a slide deck.

The reach penalty for in-post links

LinkedIn's feed algorithm tends to down-rank posts that send people off-platform, so a link in the body of a post often costs you reach. The widely used workaround is to write the post with no link, publish it, then drop your short link in the first comment right away. A clean in.bio link is ideal there — it is short, it is trackable, and because you control it you can even swap the destination later without editing the comment. Posts allow up to 3,000 characters, but the first two lines are what show before see more, so keep the hook tight.

Previews, profiles, and UTM tracking

LinkedIn's crawler (LinkedInBot) fetches a link to build the preview card and caches it aggressively, following the redirect to your destination's Open Graph tags. To compare traffic from a LinkedIn post against your other channels, tag the destination with the UTM builder before shortening. A short link also makes a far better profile or portfolio link than a raw URL — pair it with a QR code for printed business cards, or shorten the links you share on X the same way.

Featured links, newsletters, and DMs

The Featured section on your profile and the link in your About are prime, permanent real estate — a short, branded link there works harder than a raw URL and, unlike an in-post link, does not fight the feed algorithm. LinkedIn newsletters, event pages, and company links all shorten the same way, and a short link in a DM still generates a preview once the recipient's client fetches it.

Treat each placement as its own measurable channel. A distinct short link — or a UTM per placement — tells you whether your Featured link, your newsletter, or your first-comment post is what actually drives profile traffic, broken down by country and device.
